Engagment Wedding
Who keeps Rings in Michigan?
Hello All,
I am going through a divorce in Michigan and want to know who gets to keep the engagment/Wedding Rings because the marriage only lasted 4 months (she was unfaithful) and What all is she responsiable for as far as billz?
Thanks
Hall
An engagement ring is legally established to be a gift. The only basis to return an engagement ring is when the recipient of the ring calls off the wedding. That could be construed as fraud, since many rings are extremely expensive. If the giver of the ring calls off the wedding, that’s the price to do so, the cost of the ring. Wedding bands are also legal property of the wearer.
As far as her behavior during the marriage, or essentially the basis of the divorce, that may determine the conditions of property settlement, including outstanding bills or obligations. But still it’s only one factor among many.
Being that Michigan is a No-Fault divorce state, and that it’s a Community Property state, most likely the two of you will share 50-50 in bills and property accumulated during the 4 months. Anything prior to that is most likely out of discussion.
